On 1 May 2007 a committee made up of members of the Swiss People’s Party and the Federal Democratic Union of Switzerland launched a popular initiative which seeks a constitutional ban on minarets. The committee must collect 100,000 votes by 1 November 2008 in order that the initiative can move to the next stage in the legislative process. Provided that the popular initiative passes all legal obstacles and it is eventually accepted by the people, it may come into force in 2010. For now, however, there is a constitutionally enforceable right to build minarets.

Am 1. Mai 2007 lancierte das Egerkinger Initiativkomitee bestehend aus Politikern der Schweizerischen Volkspartei (SVP) und der Eidgenössisch-Demokratischen Union (EDU) eine Volksinitiative, die den Bau von Moscheetürmen (Minaretten) verbieten will. Am 8. Juli 2008 reichten Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des Initiativ-Komitees 114'895 gesammelte Unterschriften bei der Bundeskanzlei ein. Die Initiative kann dem Schweizerischen Stimmvolk erst zur Abstimmung vorgelegt werden, nachdem sie alle rechtlichen Schranken überwunden hat. Dies beinhaltet unter anderem, dass die Minarettverbotsinitiative nicht „zwingende Bestimmungen des Völkerrechts“ verletzt.
